KAZURI CERAMIC BEADS, JEWELLERY & POTTERY HANDMADE IN KENYA;
Kazuri, which means "small and beautiful" in Swahili, began
over a quarter of a century ago as a tiny workshop in the suburbs
of Nairobi, experimenting in making beads. Its founder, Lady Susan
Wood, started with two African women and soon discovered that there
were many other women in the villages around Nairobi, most of whom
were single mothers, that were in great
need
of regular employment. Driven by the desire to provide such opportunities,
Kazuri has grown and today they have a large workforce skilled in
the manufacture of hand made jewelry and pottery. They have further
applied their knowledge of ceramics and artistic flair that has
made their necklaces so attractive and popular. The design and production
of their own unique range of potteryware, which reflects the culture
and wildlife of Kenya, has become a famous fashion worldwide! Each
of their piece, like their beads is handmade and hand painted in
rich colours and they're range is extensive from the individual
collector pieces to dinner ware. As Kazuri starts its next 25 years,
they ! pledge to continue giving hope and opportunity to the more
needy
members
of their society and at the same time carry on designing and making
beautiful handmade beads and pottery. We at Zizini had the honor
of touring their workshop and have the pleasure of presenting to
you a collection of pictures displaying the workshop and the folks
at work producing these fabulous crafts at the Kazuri Company in
Karen a suburb of Nairobi kenya.
