Hemed
Saidi
I was driving along Ocean Road in Dar- es-Salaam on my left was
the Gymkhana golf Club, on my right the Indian Ocean,.....a beautiful
cool afternoon by Dar- es -Salaam standards i.e higher 70's!......
I was enjoying the ocean view, and suddenly my peaceful moment was
pleasantly interrupted as I saw Hemed Saidi walking along the beach
with his baskets made of sisal ropes, they are used for hanging flower
pots!....and I had been dreaming of displaying them at our shop ZIZINI
in Hyannis, Cape Cod, for months!.....prior!....I pulled over and
called the slightly built man and asked him the price!.....he walked
towards us gracefully, and greeted us in a very soft voice... he then
told us the price I then said to him I will buy them all right now!...
He was so excited ..he was shaking!.....as he tried to contain himself!.....I
offered to take a picture of him standing there with his crafts and
then I promised him it will be on our website for the whole world
to see!......I knew then he could not imagine what that meant. It
is at this point that I turned to one of our agents by the name of
Suleiman, we affectionately call him "Sele" and asked him
to make sure he shows Hemed when we accomplish adding him to our list
of Artisans and Crafters. WIth the promise that he will hear from
us as soon as we find a market in the U.S.A for his Crafts!
When I was a young boy , Tanzania was producing 70% of the world's
Sisal.Synthetic ropes and products of similar nature have played a
large part in reducing the demand of this commodity.
